The versatile path of Rachaad White from college transfers to the NFL
In short: From redshirting in Nebraska to becoming a dual-threat force at Arizona State, RachaHD White's journey is a masterclass in persistence. Discover how a third-round draft pick transformed from a collegiate standout into a reliable professional playmaker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and beyond.
Rachaad White's ascent through the ranks of American football is defined by a series of strategic transitions. White's time at the University of Nebraska at Kearney followed his years at Missouri's Center High School, where he gained Class 3A All-State first team recognition after accumulating more than 2,000 all-purpose yards. Following a redshirt season, he moved to Mt. San Antonio College, where his sophomore campaign saw him amass 1,264 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. Before his collegiate journey began, he grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. During his senior year at Center High School, he personally rushed for 1,325 yards.
His move to Arizona State University prior to the 2020 season marked a significant milestone. During his initial year playing for the Sun Devils, White accomplished something seldom seen: no ASU player had topped the team's rushing and receiving yardage totals simultaneously since 1949. By his senior year, he had solidified his reputation, recording 1,006 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, alongside 43 receptions for 456 yards. His impact was particularly notable in late 2020, when he recorded 202 rushing yards and three touchdowns against USC on November 6. Just one week later, he followed that with 184 rushing yards and two touchdowns against Washington.
Selected 91st overall in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, White quickly integrated into the professional ranks. His rookie season was highlighted by a dramatic Week 13 performance against the New Orleans Saints, where he caught a touchdown pass from Tom Brady with just three seconds remaining to aid a 13-point comeback. On March 13, 2026, the Washington Commanders secured White with a $2 million, one-year deal after his successful stints in Tampa Bay. In his 2023 campaign, he recorded 990 rushing yards and 549 receiving yards. He even managed a receiving touchdown during the Divisional Round loss to the Detroit Lions.
