The goalkeeper who broke records and then walked away from his roots
In short: Mile Svilar’s rise in European football was defined by unprecedented speed. By age 18, he was shattering records in the Champions League, becoming a standout for Benfica and later Roma. Yet, his career is also marked by a dramatic, public fracture with the national team he once chose to represent.
Born in Belgium to a Serbian father and a Bosnian Serb mother, Svilar’s identity was initially tied to his heritage. Despite being eligible for three different nations, he officially committed to the Serbian national team in late 2017. He made his debut for Serbia in September 2021, following a period where he was a staple of the Belgian youth systems, including the U-17 team where he served as the primary goalkeeper in 2016.
His professional trajectory was meteoric. After joining Benfica in 2017, he became their youngest-ever goalkeeper during a match against Olhanense. That same season, he entered the Champions League and surpassed Iker Casillas as the youngest keeper to feature in the tournament. His debut in that competition was a whirlwind of extremes: at just 18 years and 52 days, he set a record for the youngest goalkeeper to stop a penalty, while simultaneously becoming the youngest player to commit an own goal in the competition's history.
The narrative took a sharp turn in 2024. After a three-year absence from the international stage, Svilar was offered a call-up by Serbia. He reportedly declined the opportunity, leading to a definitive break with the national team. Manager Dragan Stojković confirmed that Svilar would no longer be considered for the squad. Now playing for Roma, where he has been named the league's best goalkeeper for consecutive seasons, Svilar remains a study in the complexities of sporting loyalty and the pressures of elite-level performance.
Svilar's technical proficiency is evidenced by his 2024–25 season in Serie A, where he maintained a 77% save percentage and recorded 16 clean sheets. His ability to perform under pressure was highlighted in early 2024 when he saved two penalties in a Europa League shootout, earning him a spot on the Team of the Season.
