From Flint to the NBA: The meteoric rise and turbulent career of Miles Bridges
In short: A basketball prodigy from Michigan, Miles Bridges moved from the streets of Flint to the bright lights of the NBA. His journey features record-breaking scoring, high-stakes trades, and significant personal controversy that has defined his professional legacy.
Born in Flint, Michigan, on March 21, 1998, Miles Bridges was immersed in basketball from age two by his father, Raymond. His early development saw him playing for Flint Southwestern Academy, where at just 14 years old, he stood 6'4" and averaged a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Seeking to escape the violence and distractions of his hometown, Bridges transferred to Huntington Prep School in West Virginia in 2013, a move encouraged by teammate Javontae Hawkins.
His high school years were marked by elite performance, including a 2015 run in the Dick's Sporting Goods High School Nationals Tournament and being named a McDonald's All-American in 2016. By the time he reached Michigan State University, he was a highly coveted recruit, ranked as high as No. 8 by ESPN. At Michigan State, he earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and was a finalist for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year watchlist, eventually declaring for the NBA draft following a second-round NCAA tournament upset in 2018.
Bridges' professional career has been a mix of high-scoring feats and disciplinary struggles. Drafted 12th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2018—only to be traded to the Charlotte Hornets on draft night—he has since recorded career-highs of 45 and 46 points in single games. However, his career has been shadowed by significant incidents, including a $50,000 fine for throwing a mouthpiece at a fan in 2022 and a 30-game suspension in 2023 following a domestic violence investigation. In July 2026, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns as part of a multi-player deal involving Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale.
