Breaking records before adulthood: The rise of Serbia's youngest prodigy
In short: Andrija Maksimović didn't just enter the world of professional football; he shattered its chronological boundaries. By the time most teenagers are finishing high school, Maksimović was already rewriting national records and competing on the biggest stages in European soccer.
Born in Novi Pazar in 2007, Andrija Maksimović followed a rapid ascent through the Serbian football pyramid. After developing at FK Pazar Juniors and OFK Vlada Dimitrijević, he joined the Red Star Belgrade youth academy. His professional trajectory accelerated in late 2023; at just 16 years and 2 months old, he made his debut for Grafičar Beograd, scoring a goal in the process. By December of that same year, he was already making first-team appearances for Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian Cup.
Maksimović's impact is defined by historic milestones in high-pressure environments. In September 2024, he became the youngest player to provide an assist in the 'Eternal derby' against Partizan Belgrade. He later cemented his legacy by becoming the youngest goalscorer in that same storied rivalry in April 2025. His technical profile as a midfielder is characterized by notable dribbling ability, which earned him the nickname "Mesi" during his childhood due to his resemblance to Lionel Messi.
His international and club career has been equally meteoric. On October 12, 2024, he broke a 42-year-old national record to become Serbia's youngest official match player at age 17 years and 129 days, surpassing Mitar Mrkela's 1982 mark. Following his development in the Serbian SuperLiga—where he was named Player of the Week in early 2025—he signed a five-year deal with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in July 2025. He has since represented Serbia in World Cup qualifiers and competed in the UEFA Champions League against elite clubs like Inter Milan.
The narrative of Maksimović is one of extreme precocity. His inclusion in The Guardian's Next Generation 2024 list highlights a shift toward identifying elite talent at increasingly younger ages, where physical maturity is secondary to technical mastery and psychological readiness for the professional spotlight.
