From sadistic villain to national icon: the evolution of Mohanlal
In short: Before he was a titan of Indian cinema, Mohanlal was a villain. His journey from a sadistic antagonist in a cult thriller to a National Award winner and a record-breaking box office powerhouse offers a masterclass in artistic versatility and the enduring power of character transformation.
Mohanlal's cinematic journey began with a stark contrast to his later persona. He made his debut in 1980 in the romantic thriller Manjil Virinja Pookkal, where he played Narendran, a sadistic husband. This role earned him immediate recognition and helped establish a cult status for the film, though it initially pigeonholed him into villainous characters throughout the early 1980s.
His transition to a leading man was marked by strategic variety. In 1982, he appeared in Padayottam, the first Malayalam film shot on 70 mm, before establishing himself as a lead in the family drama Aattakalasam. By 1984, he was shaping trends, starring in the screwball comedy Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, which popularized the genre in the 1980s, and earning critical acclaim for his antihero turn in Uyarangalil.
The 1980s and 90s saw him achieve unprecedented milestones. In 1986, at age 26, he became the youngest recipient of the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for T. P. Balagopalan M.A., a record he held for two decades. His production house, Pranavam Arts, launched in 1990, producing the highest-grossing film of that year, His Highness Abdullah. By 1991, his performance in Bharatham earned him a National Film Award for Best Actor, with Forbes India later naming it one of the 25 greatest acting performances in Indian cinema.
Mohanlal's influence eventually transcended regional boundaries and reached global stages. He starred in the first Malayalam film submitted for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1997 (Guru) and appeared in the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 with Vanaprastham. His career is defined by this duality: achieving massive commercial success—such as the record-breaking Pulimurugan in 2016—while maintaining a reputation for high-art performances that earned him honorary ranks from the Indian Territorial Army and the Indian Medical Association.
