How a small village club rose to the heights of Portuguese football
In short: Based in the small municipality of Guimarães, Moreirense F.C. has spent decades navigating the volatile tides of promotion and relegation. From its 1938 origins to trophy-winning campaigns, the club's history is a masterclass in resilience and sudden, spectacular success.
Founded on 1 November 1938, Moreirense Futebol Clube began its journey far from the bright lights of the top flight. For much of its early history, the club operated in the lower tiers, only making its debut in the second division in 1995. This initial period in the Liga de Honra lasted five seasons before the club faced the challenges of the lower leagues.
The club's first golden era arrived under the management of Manuel Machado. Following a stint in the Segunda Divisão, Machado orchestrated two promotions in just two years, finally bringing the northern side to the top flight. His tenure saw the club stabilize, even securing a ninth-place finish in the Primeira Liga. However, the departure of Machado to nearby Vitória de Guimarães triggered a period of instability, including two consecutive relegations.
Moreirense has proven remarkably adept at bouncing back. After returning to the second level in 2010 and the top flight in 2012, the club secured the 2013–14 Segunda Liga title under Toni Conceição. Their most significant silverware came on 29 January 2017, when they defeated S.C. Braga to win the Taça da Liga.
The club's recent history is marked by extreme fluctuations. While Ivo Vieira led them to a record sixth-place finish in 2018–19, the 2021–22 season saw a painful relegation following a playoff loss to G.D. Chuppes. Yet, the response was immediate: under Paulo Alves, the club won the 2022–23 Liga Portugal 2, amassing 79 points from 102 possible—the highest point total and percentage achieved in an 18-team season of the league.
