The rare feat of a perfect tournament shooting night
In short: In the high-pressure environment of the NCAA tournament, perfection is nearly impossible. Yet, Morez Johnson Jr. achieved it, becoming one of only five players in history to shoot 100% while recording at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in a single game.
Morez Johnson Jr.'s path to the NBA was defined by rapid development and high-stakes transitions. After being named Illinois' Mr. Basketball in 2024, he committed to the Fighting Illini despite interest from major programs like Florida and Ohio State. His freshman year at Illinois was marked by physical adversity; after a promising start where he recorded his first double-double against UMES on November 26, 2025, he suffered a broken wrist in February 2025 against Michigan State.
Seeking a new environment, Johnson transferred to the University of Michigan in April 2025. His impact was immediate and historic. During his sophomore season under coach Dusty May, he led the Wolverines to a regular-season championship and a national title. As a key offensive figure, he assisted Michigan in becoming the initial squad to defeat three successive AP-ranked rivals by margins of 30+ points or more.
The pinnacle of his collegiate career occurred on March 19, 2026, during the first round against Howard. Johnson's performance—shooting 8-of-8 from the field while tallying 21 points and 10 rebounds—placed him in an elite historical bracket. This efficiency propelled Michigan to a 37-win season (tying a Big Ten record) and a national championship. He entered the 2026 NBA draft as a top prospect, eventually being selected ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks.
Beyond the collegiate level, Johnson established himself as an international gold medalist. The 2024 FIBA Under-18 AmeriCup and 2025 FIBA Under-19 World Cup both featured him as a member of Team USA. In Switzerland during the latter tournament, he anchored an undefeated squad, averaging nearly 10 points per game and securing another gold medal before turning professional.
