From São Paulo youth ranks to the Premier League's orbit
In short: In 2019, an 18-year-old defender left Brazil for a €6 million move to Portugal. Since then, Felipe Rodrigues da Silva, known as Morato, has navigated the intense pressures of European football, from Champions League battles to becoming a standout defender in the Primeira Liga.
Born in Francisco Morato, Brazil, in June 2001, the defender's ascent through the European ranks began in earnest when he moved from São Paulo to Benfica in September 2019. The transfer, valued at €6 million, included a clause allowing the Brazilian club to retain 15% of his next transfer rights. His early professional years were marked by rapid integration, moving from Benfica B appearances in late 2019 to making his first-team debut against Vitória de Setúbal in December of that same year.
Morato's development was characterized by significant milestones on the continental stage. During the 2019–20 season, he contributed to the Benfica under-19 side's run to the UEFA Youth League runners-up spot, notably scoring against Olympique Lyoniass on 5 November. His progression into the Benfica senior squad accelerated during the 2021–22 season, spurred by injuries to veteran Jan Vertonghen. This period saw him score in the Champions League against Bayern Munich in November 2021 and eventually earn the Primeira Liga Defender of the Month award for August 2022 under manager Roger Schmidt.
The defender's career has since transitioned to the English game. Following a period of high-profile competition, he signed a five-year contract with Nottingham Forest on 30 August 2024 for a reported £12.6 million. His trajectory continued into the 2026 season, when he joined West Ham United on loan. His ability to perform at the highest levels was further recognized when he was named to the UEFA Europa League Team of the Season for 2025–26.
