Can a mother’s desperate choice to separate twins create a lifelong curse?
In short: In the 2022 Tamil horror thriller Naane Varuvean, a mother’s attempt to save one child by abandoning the other triggers a cycle of violence. Years later, the consequences manifest as a haunting psychological struggle between a settled family man and his brother's violent legacy.
The narrative centers on Prabhu and Kathir, identical twins whose lives diverged due to a mother's intervention. After Kathir exhibited erratic behavior and was tied to a tree, he allegedly killed a kidnapper and returned home, only to lock his innocent brother Prabhu in a wooden box and murder their father. Fearing the twins could not coexist, their mother abandoned Kathir at a temple and fled with Prabhu, seeking to preserve their lives. Decades later, the consequences resurface through Prabhu's daughter, Sathya, who begins experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia at age 12. She claims to be haunted by a boy named Sonu. Prabhu eventually discovers that Sonu was a child killed by Kathir, who had settled in a remote cabin with a mute wife and two children of his own.
Kathir's inability to control his murderous impulses led to the accidental deaths of his wife and Sonu, creating a spiritual tether that continues to plague Prabhu's family. The film explores the mechanics of 'twin telepathy' and the psychological horror of inherited trauma. In a climactic confrontation in the hill town of Chopda, Prabhu attempts to stop Kathir from harming a final child, Manu. While Prabhu manages to push Kathir off a cliff, the story ends on an ambiguous note. The film leaves it uncertain whether Kathir is truly dead or if he has possessed Prabhu, suggesting that the cycle of violence may be inescapable.
