In short: Born from the union of two local clubs, NAC Breda has navigated a century of dramatic highs and lows. From winning national titles to surviving near-bankruptcy, the club's identity is defined by a fierce, flamboyant spirit and a deep connection to its home city.

Founded on 19 September 1912, NAC Breda emerged from the merger of ADVENDO and NOAD. The name itself is a linguistic puzzle: it combines the abbreviations of its parent clubs to form a phrase meaning 'never give up, always persevere, pleasant for entertainment and useful for relaxation.' While the merger was initially fraught with tension over the club's name, it eventually birthed a team that would become a dominant force in the early 20th century.

The club's golden era arrived in the 1920s. After winning the Southern Division in 1919, NAC secured the Dutch national title in 1921. They were so technically proficient during the 1920s and 30s that they were considered one of the finest teams in the country. This period also saw the rise of Antoon 'Rat' Verlegh, a legendary figure who served the club in various capacities from its inception until his retirement in 1931.

However, success has often been shadowed by instability. The club has faced multiple relegations and severe financial crises, including a period in the late 1980s where it nearly faced bankruptcy. These struggles led to significant structural changes, such as the 2003 decision to add 'Breda' to the club's name as a gesture of gratitude after the city purchased their stadium to prevent financial collapse. Today, the club continues to navigate the ups and downs of professional football, moving between the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie.
