The goalkeeper who saved a nation from a penalty shootout
In short: In the final moments of a high-stakes semifinal, one save can define a career. Nadeo Argawinata became a national hero in Indonesia not just through years of steady play, but by stopping a crucial penalty that propelled his team into a historic final.
Nadeo Argawinata’s journey to the top of Indonesian football began in the youth clubs of Kediri Regency on Java. Seeking professional opportunities, he moved to Borneo island to join Borneo for the 2016 Indonesia Soccer Championship A. His ascent was remarkably rapid; at just 19 years old, he became the youngest goalkeeper to ever play in the highest level of Indonesian football. He made his debut on March 22, 2016, as a substitute in a Bhayangkara Cup match, though his first official Liga 1 appearance didn't arrive until June 3, 2017, in an East Kalimantan Derby.
Argawinata's career is a study in persistence and patience. After establishing himself as a reliable starter for Borneo during the 2018 and 2019 Liga 1 seasons, he was scouted by Bali United in late 2019. However, his transition to the new club was not immediate. He spent much of 2020 and 2021 as a backup to the veteran Wawan Hendrawan, only making his league debut for Bali United on October 23, 2021. This period of 'waiting' served as a prelude to his most significant international contributions.
His breakout moment occurred during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines, where he helped the under-23 team secure a silver medal. This performance paved the way for his senior national team call-up in May 2021. The definitive moment of his career came on December 25, 2021, during the 2020 AFF Championship semifinal against the hosts. Argawinata denied a late penalty by Faris Ramli, a Singaporean, to keep the tally level at 2-2. This save allowed Indonesia to enter extra time, where they eventually scored two more goals to reach the final.
Since that viral moment, Argawinata has solidified his status as an elite keeper. He has been named the APPI Indonesian Football Award Best Goalkeeper for the 2023–24 and 2025–26 seasons. His reliability continues to be a cornerstone for the national team, evidenced by his late call-up in January 2024 to cover an injury for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, and his consistent ability to stop penalties in high-pressure qualifiers.
