How a B.Tech dropout became a Malayalam cinema powerhouse
In short: From minor roles to record-breaking blockbusters, Naslen K. Gafoor has rapidly ascended the ranks of Indian film. In just a few years, he has transitioned from a witty supporting actor to the lead of the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
Born on 11 June 2000 in Kodungallur, Kerala, Naslen’s path to stardom was not linear. After completing his education at St. Joseph's School in Mathilakam, he initially pursued a B.Tech. degree, though he chose to leave the course after two years to pursue acting.
His cinematic journey began in 2019, initially appearing as a junior artist in Madhura Raja before securing his first credited role as Melvin in Thanneer Mathan Dinologal. This early performance earned him recognition for his sharp comedic timing and witty dialogue delivery. By 2021, he was appearing in high-profile streaming releases on platforms like Amazon Prime, playing characters such as the fiery teenager Rasool in Kuruthi and Charles Oliver Twist in Home.
The actor's career reached a massive commercial turning point in 2024 with the release of Premalu. Directed by Girish A. D., the film became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films ever, earning ₹136 crore worldwide. This momentum continued into 2025, a year that saw both significant box office milestones. While Alappuzha Gymkhana earned over ₹50 crore, his role in the superheroine epic Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra propelled him to new heights. The film, featuring Kalyani Priyadarshan, became the highest-grossing Malayalam film in history, surpassing the ₹300 crore mark.
Naslen's rise represents a significant shift in the industry's box office landscape, moving from small, lovable comedic roles to anchoring massive, high-budget productions.
