In short: Before becoming a mainstay in the English Championship, Nat Phillips was just two days away from moving to the United States. A last-minute change of heart led him from a North Carolina scholarship to the heart of Liverpool's academy, sparking a nomadic professional journey across Europe.

Born in Bolton in 1997, Phillips followed in the footsteps of his father, former footballer Jimmy Phillips, who managed him in the Bolton Wanderers academy. However, his path took a dramatic turn in 2016. Once he obtained a scholarship from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Phillips intended to travel to the U.S. for his studies. Just two days before his flight, he opted to join Liverpool's academy instead, a pivotal decision that defined his professional trajectory.

His time at Liverpool was marked by a high-profile 'loan carousel' designed to provide competitive minutes. He spent time in Germany with VfB Stuttgart, where he made his professional debut in the DFB-Pokal in 2019. Liverpool recalled him in early 2020 due to an injury crisis, leading to his first-team debut against Everton. Although he proved dependable beneath Jürgen Klopp, Phillips found it hard to play regularly, later joining AFC Bournemouth, Celtic, Cardiff City, and Derby County on loan.

One of his most notable individual performances came in March 2021, when he earned a man of the match award for Liverpool in a Champions League win over RB Leipzig. His journey eventually led him to Derby County in 2024, where he played a key role in helping the club avoid relegation to League One. In June 2025, he secured a permanent move to West Bromwich Albion, continuing a career built on adaptability and tactical flexibility across multiple leagues.
