How a single soaring mark announced the arrival of an AFL icon
In short: In 2010, a newcomer to the Fremantle Dockers stunned the league with a spectacular pack mark. Nathan Fyfe was not just another recruit; he was the beginning of a legendary era defined by individual brilliance and relentless physical resilience.
Nathan Fyfe’s ascent in the Australian Football League was marked by immediate impact. Drafted with the 20th pick in the 2009 national draft, he debuted in 2010 during an ANZAC Day victory over the Richmond Tigers. His arrival was punctuated by a soaring pack mark and a subsequent Goal of the Week nomination. By 2011, he had established himself as a statistical powerhouse, leading Fremantle in disposals, contested possessions, and hard ball gets, earning comparisons to the great James Hird.
His career was a masterclass in navigating extreme physical adversity. Fyfe endured significant setbacks, including a dislocated shoulder in 2012 that required surgery, and a severe leg fracture in 2016 that necessitated the insertion of a surgical plate. Even as injuries like hamstring strains and foot issues threatened his longevity, his ability to return to elite form remained unparalleled. In 2015, despite playing through a fractured leg, he secured his first Brownlow Medal, polling 31 votes to become the first Fremantle player to win the league's highest individual honour.
The peak of his individual dominance arrived in 2019. Serving as the All-Australian captain, Fyfe achieved a career-high disposal average of 29.2 and claimed his second Brownlow Medal, polling 33 votes. This feat made him only the 15th player in VFL/AFL history to win the award twice. After years of leading the club as captain from 2017 to 2022, the legendary midfielder eventually announced his retirement, set for the conclusion of the 2025 season, leaving behind a legacy of two Leigh Matthews Trophies and three All-Australian selections.
