The halfback who turned Penrith into a premiership powerhouse
In short: Born in Sydney and raised between Australia and New Zealand, Nathan Cleary has become one of rugby league's most decorated players. From a teenage debut to multiple grand final victories, his career is defined by elite kicking and a unique professional bond with his father, the Penrith Panthers head coach.
Nathan Cleary's ascent in the NRL began in 2016, a season where he became the youngest player to score 200 points in a single season and the highest point-scorer in the league with 228 points. This feat was the youngest achieved since 1913. His early career was marked by rapid progression, moving from the Penrith junior system to making his NRL debut against the Melbourne Storm in 2016.
A central figure in the Penrith Panthers' recent dominance, Cleary has secured multiple honors, including the Dally M Player of the Year in 2026 and the Clive Churchill Medal following the club's 2021 Grand Final victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs. His success is intertwined with his family; he is the son of Ivan Cleary, who serves as the Panthers' head coach.
Beyond club success, Cleary has been a cornerstone for New South Wales and Australia. He has won State of Origin series titles with New South Wales in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2026, and was named the Wally Lewis Medalist in 2026. On the international stage, he was part of Australia's 2021 Rugby League World Cup winning squad and the 2025 Rugby League Ashes series victory.
Despite his accolades, his career has faced hurdles, including a $30,000 fine and two-match ban in 2020 for breaching COVID-19 isolation protocols, and a five-game suspension in 2022 for a dangerous lifting tackle. Nevertheless, his ability to perform under pressure remains a defining trait of his playstyle.
