Why baseball's West Division was born from a fear of competitive imbalance
In short: When Major League Baseball expanded in 1969, owners faced a dilemma. They could prioritize geography or parity. Fearing one division would dominate the league, they created a West Division that defied geography, forcing teams to traverse multiple time zones and endure grueling travel schedules.
The creation of the National League West in 1969 was driven by a desire to prevent a massive imbalance in team strength. Before realignment occurred, the Cubs, Giants, and Cardinals occupied the top three spots in the standings. To avoid clustering these powerhouses in a single division, the league opted for a split that prioritized competitive parity over geographic logic.
This decision had significant logistical consequences. While the American League maintained a geographically sensible alignment, the National League's West Division was scattered across three time zones. Even though the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds were located in the Eastern Time Zone, they were placed in the West, necessitating frequent, long-distance travel to California.
The inaugural 1969 season proved how competitive the new structure could be. Five of the six teams in the West were in the hunt for the championship, separated by as little as one-and-a-half games by mid-August. While the expansion San Diego Padres struggled, the division produced a thrilling race that saw the Braves clinch the title following a strong surge in the season's final months.
The logistical strain of this arrangement eventually became unsustainable. The difficulty of scheduling TV and radio broadcasts, combined with the immense travel requirements for teams like the Braves and Reds, led to a major realignment in 1994. This reorganization moved several founding members, including the Braves, Reds, and Astros, into new divisions.
