The turbulent coaching career of Nathaniel Hackett, from NFL coordinator to head coach
In short: Born on December 19, 1979, Nathaniel Hackett has navigated a complex career across the National Football League. From his early days as a quality control coach to his high-profile stint as a head coach and his subsequent roles as an offensive coordinator, his journey highlights the intense pressures of professional football.
Nathaniel Hackett, son of former coach Paul Hackett, began his NFL path in 2006 under Jon Gruden with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His early career included stints with the Buffalo Bills and Syracuse University, where he worked under Doug Marrone. Hackett gained significant recognition as the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, where he helped Aaron Rodgers secure back-to-back MVP awards in 2020 and 2021, and led the league's top-scoring offense in 2020.
In 2022, Hackett transitioned to head coach of the Denver Broncos. His tenure was marked by immediate scrutiny regarding clock management, particularly during a narrow loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Following a 4–11 record, he was fired on December 26, 2022, becoming one of only five head coaches since the 1970 AFL–NFL merger to be dismissed before completing his first season. His tenure was widely criticized by pundits and even his successor, Sean Payton, though Payton later apologized for his remarks.
Following his departure from Denver, Hackett served as offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, where he eventually lost play-calling duties during the 2024 season. His career continued with a role as a defensive analyst for the Packers in 2025 and a brief stint as quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins in early 2026. By February 2026, he had joined the Arizona Cardinals as their offensive coordinator. His path illustrates the volatile nature of NFL coaching, where success as a coordinator does not always translate to the head coaching chair.
