From Championship standout to Premier League star and trophy-winning veteran
In short: Nathaniel Clyne’s career is a testament to resilience. After rising through the Crystal Palace academy to become a top-flight star, he faced a grueling battle with persistent injuries at Liverpool. Yet, he eventually returned to his boyhood club to secure historic silverware, proving that persistence can rewrite a player's destiny.
Born in Stockwell, South London, on 5 April 1991, Nathaniel Clyne began his professional journey at Crystal Palace. Following his senior debut in October 2008, his ascent was quick; he was the Football League's youngest player to feature in every game throughout the 2010–11 season. His talent was undeniable, earning him the Football League Young Player of the Year award in 2010 and Crystal Palace's Player of the Season in 2011.
A move to Southampton in 2012 saw Clyne cement his status in the Premier League, scoring five goals over three seasons. This form earned him a £12.5 million transfer to Liverpool in July 2015. While he was initially a key starter, his momentum was disrupted by significant injury problems, including a back injury in 2017 and a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in July 2019. These setbacks eventually led to his departure from Anfield in June 2020.
Clyne's career came full circle when he rejoined Crystal Palace in 2020. After fighting to regain fitness, he became a vital part of the squad's success. He was an unused substitute during the club's historic 2025 FA Cup victory against Manchester City and later helped the team secure the 2026 UEFA Conference League title. By the time he departed Palace in July 2026, he had become the last remaining player in the squad to have played for the club in the EFL Championship.
