How a flashy high school layup specialist became an NBA Sixth Man of the Year
In short: Before he was a professional star, Naz Reid was a viral sensation known for wild finger roll layups. Known as 'Big Jelly,' he was the only member of the 'Jelly Fam' internet movement to reach the NBA, transforming from a high school standout into a cornerstone of Minnesota basketball culture.
Naz Reid's journey to the NBA was anything but linear. Despite being a consensus 5-star recruit and the third-best power forward in the United States during high school, he went undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft. He initially entered the league via a two-way contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, splitting time between the NBA and the Iowa Wolves of the G League.
His resilience paid off as he transitioned from a reserve to a vital component of the Timberwolves' rotation. By the 2023–24 season, Reid had reached a career milestone, scoring 34 points in a single game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. This performance helped propel him to win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in April 2024, recognizing his impact as a high-level substitute.
Reid's influence has extended far beyond the court, evolving into a cultural phenomenon in Minnesota. His name has become a form of shared expression for fans, manifesting in everything from viral pizzeria signs to specialized crop art at the Minnesota State Fair. This connection was so strong that commemorative beach towels featuring his name eventually sold for over $100 on eBay.
The player's career has also seen significant financial growth and movement. After signing a $42 million extension in 2023, he secured a massive five-year, $125 million deal with Minnesota in June 2025. His time in Minnesota ended during summer 2026, following a multi-team transaction that sent him to the Charlotte Hornets.
