The unusual history of the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award
In short: From a losing player winning the first trophy to a rookie's historic feat, the NBA Finals MVP award holds records that defy the standard logic of basketball greatness. Discover how a panel of eleven media members decides who truly defines a championship series.
Established in 1969, the award was originally known simply as the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player. To celebrate the 11-time champion, Commissioner David Stern rebranded the trophy as the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award on February 14, 2009. For decades, the trophy featured a black base with a gold basketball, a design that remained until a new version was introduced in 2005.
The award's history is marked by singular achievements. Jerry West, the inaugural winner in 1969, remains the only player to receive the honor while playing for the losing team. In terms of age, the records are equally distinct: Magic Johnson holds the title of the youngest winner at 20 years and 276 days old, while Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the record for the oldest at 38 years and 54 days old in 1985.
While Michael Jordan dominates the record books with six wins, the award's lineage includes diverse paths to glory. The list of winners includes second-round draft picks like Nikola Jokić and Jalen Brunson, as well as international stars trained entirely outside the U.S., such as Tony Parker and Dirk Nowitzki. The selection process remains consistent, relying on a panel of eleven media members who cast their votes following the conclusion of the Finals.
The award also tracks individual dominance through streaks. Only Shaquille O'Neal and Michael Jordan have secured the honour for three years running, a milestone Jordan reached twice. Meanwhile, LeBron James stands out as the only player to have secured the title with three different franchises.
