The rise of Nayef Aguerd: from Moroccan academy to European football star
In short: From the Mohammed VI Academy to the heights of the FIFA World Cup, Nayef Agund's journey is a masterclass in professional progression. Discover how a defender from Kenitra moved through the leagues of France and England to become a cornerstone of the Moroccan national team.
After starting his football journey at the Mohammed VI Academy, Kenitra-born Nayef Aguerd joined FUS Rabat in 2014. His early professional years in the Botola were marked by rapid development, including scoring his first continental goal against UMS de Loum in March 2015 and helping FUS Rabat reach the 2015 Throne Cup final.
Aguerd's career trajectory saw him ascend through the French Ligue 1, first with Dijon, where he scored on his debut in August 2018, and later with Rennes. His impact in France was recognized by the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé, where he was ranked as the 11th best African player in the league in 2021 and climbed to 3rd place by May 2022. His European exploits continued in the UEFA Europa Conference League, earning him a place in the 2022–23 Team of the Season.
A major £30 million transfer to West Ham United in June 2022 signaled his arrival in the Premier League. Despite facing an ankle injury in July 2022 that required surgery, he eventually secured major silverware, winning the 2022–23 UEFA Europa Conference League. After stints including a loan at Real Sociedad, Aguerd returned to Ligue 1 with Marseille in September 2025 for a reported fee of around €23 million.
On the international stage, Aguerd has been a vital figure for Morocco. He was part of the squad that won the 2018 African Nations Championship and played a key role in the 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar. Though his tournament was marked by the heartbreak of missing the quarter-final and semi-final due to injury and illness, his defensive presence helped Morocco concede only once in four matches.
