The unexpected draft slide that turned into a Super Bowl championship
In short: In 2018, NFL experts projected Justin Reid as a top-tier first or second-round pick. Instead, he fell to the third round. That unexpected slide proved to be one of the draft's biggest steals, launching a career that would eventually lead to a Super Bowl ring.
Justin Quintin Reid’s professional journey began with a surprising detour. Despite being ranked as the top free safety prospect by DraftScout.com and a top-three safety by Scouts Inc. and Sports Illustrated, he was selected 68th overall in the 2018 NFL draft by the Houston Texans. This drop from his projected first or second-round status was considered an unexpected fall, yet it resulted in what analysts labeled one of the draft's greatest steals.
Reid's early career was marked by rapid ascent and physical resilience. After his junior season at Stanford, where he recorded 170 tackles, six interceptions, and one sack, he entered the league with high expectations. His rookie season in 2018 saw him transition from a backup to a starter, finishing with 88 combined tackles and a 101-yard touchdown return against the Washington Redskins.
His career trajectory continued through stints with the Texans and eventually the Kansas City Chiefs. After signing a $31.50 million contract with Kansas City in 2022, Reid became a vital component of their defense. His tenure in Kansas City reached a pinnacle in February 2023, when he started at free safety in Super Bowl LVIII, contributing to the Chiefs' 38–35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles and earning his first Super Bowl ring.
Throughout his career, Reid has navigated significant physical challenges, including a torn labrum in his shoulder and various concussions. Despite these setbacks, he has maintained a consistent presence on the field, evolving from a high-potential prospect into a seasoned veteran capable of playing multiple roles, including stepping in as a kicker during a game against the Arizona Cardinals.
