In short: NCT Wish represents the final expansion of the ambitious NCT project, a multi-national boy band concept first envisioned in 2016. Managed by SM Entertainment and Avex Trax, this six-member group blends Japanese and Korean influences, aiming to fulfill the dreams of fans through a unique musical identity and strategic regional growth.

The origins of NCT Wish trace back to January 2016, when SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man announced a vision for a global boy group with units based in various cities worldwide. By June 2019, producer Chris Lee confirmed that a Japanese unit was in development. This strategy materialized in December 2022, when the company officially announced a Tokyo-based subunit, later designated as the final addition to the broader NCT collective.

Formation of the group involved a rigorous selection process. Two members, Yushi and Sion, were introduced as SM Rookies in June 2023, while the remaining lineup was determined through the survival show NCT Universe: Lastart, which began airing in July 2023. The group initially performed under the tentative name NCT New Team, serving as an opening act for NCT Nation concerts in Osaka and Tokyo before embarking on a 28-performance pre-debut tour across Japan.

Following the departure of member Jungmin for health reasons in October 2023, the group solidified its final six-member roster. In January 2024, they were officially branded as NCT Wish, a name derived from the catchphrase 'WISH for Our WISH.' Their official debut occurred on February 21, 2024, at SMTOWN Live 2024 SMCU Palace in Tokyo, followed by the release of their single 'Wish.' The group has since maintained a rapid pace of production, releasing EPs like Steady and the studio album Wishful, while continuing to expand their reach through fan meetings and high-profile collaborations.

The group's members bring diverse backgrounds to the stage. Yushi, for instance, trained for approximately seven years, while others like Riku and Sion were scouted through global auditions or social media. Their rapid ascent, including being named one of the '11 Rookie K-Pop Acts to Know in 2024' by the US Grammy, highlights the effectiveness of SM Entertainment's structured approach to talent development and international market integration.
