In short: Before they were the Wolfpack, they were the Farmers. NC State's football journey began in 1892 with a simple game in a park, evolving through world wars, identity shifts, and legendary coaching eras to become a cornerstone of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The program's origins date back to March 12, 1892, when the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts hosted the Raleigh Male Academy in Pullen Park. Led by first coach Perrin Busbee, the 'Aggies' won 12–6 before the school played its first intercollegiate game against the University of Tennessee the following year. The team's identity was fluid; they were known as the Farmers for decades and wore red and white uniforms as early as 1895. It wasn't until 1921 that the local media began referring to the team as the Wolfpack, a name that stuck as they joined the Southern Conference.

The program faced significant hurdles, including the 1918 season being cut short by World War I and a severe flu outbreak, leading to a staggering 128–0 loss to Georgia Tech. However, the 1920s saw a resurgence, including the first victory over rival UNC in 1920 and the installation of field lighting at Riddick Stadium in 1930. The 1940s and 50s brought modernization, including the first nationally televised game in 1950 and the program's transition to scholarship athletics in 1933. NC State also became a charter member of the ACC in 1953, moving away from the Southern Conference.

Coaching history is marked by both stability and dramatic shifts. Earle Edwards served as the longest-tenured coach, laying the foundation for future success between 1954 and 1971. This was followed by a high-octane era under Lou Holtz, who led the team to several bowl wins and high rankings in the 1970s. The program also saw the rise of notable figures like Bo Rein, whose tragic death in a plane crash led to the creation of the 'Bo Rein Award' for unsung contributors. Today, the Wolfpack continues this legacy at Carter–Finley Stadium, the largest college football venue in the state.
