The striker who went from record-breaking teenager to Premier League provocateur
In short: In 2012, Neal Maupay became the youngest scorer of the 21st century in Ligue 1. Since then, the French striker has navigated high-stakes transfers, controversial social media posts, and even a landmark prosecution involving death threats, proving that professional football is as much about mental fortitude as it is about scoring goals.
Neal Maupay’s ascent was meteoric. Born in Versailles and raised on the Côte d'Azur, he entered the Nice academy in 2007. By age 16 years and 123 days, he became the youngest scorer in the 21st century after finding the net for Nice against Evian. This early success, however, was met with physical setbacks, including a torn cruciate ligament in April 2013 that disrupted his momentum.
His career has been defined by significant movement and high-value transfers. After a successful loan at Brest in 2016–17, where he won the UNFP Ligue 2 Player of the Month for August, he moved to Brentford in July 2017 for a fee reported to be £1.6 million. He made an instant impression at Brentford, securing both the Supporters' and Players' Player of the Year titles for 2018–19; during that campaign, he netted 28 goals and earned the EFL Player of the Year prize at the 2019 London Football Awards.
The intensity of the Premier League brought both scrutiny and controversy. In 2020, Maupay was targeted with death threats following a goal against Arsenal, leading to a landmark prosecution in Singapore against 19-year-old Derek Ng. His career has also seen moments of friction, such as a 2025 social media post regarding Everton scores that sparked outrage among supporters. Now playing for Marseille on a loan with an obligation to buy, Maupay continues to navigate the complexities of top-flight European football.
Despite his French upbringing, Maupay holds Argentinian nationality through his mother and has expressed interest in representing the Argentina national team. His playing style, inspired by idol Zinedine Zidane, focuses on using pace to get behind defenses while operating primarily as a striker.
