The teenage prodigy who rewrote the English football record books
In short: In 2016, a 16-year-old arrived on the professional scene and immediately shattered long-standing benchmarks. From scoring historic goals to winning five individual awards in a single season, Ryan Sessegnon's rapid ascent from Fulham's academy to a £25 million transfer is a remarkable study in precocity.
Ryan Sessegnon’s rise was defined by unprecedented milestones. During his breakout 2016–17 season with Fulham, he became the first player born in the 2000s to find the net in the professional English leagues. He also set a new record as the youngest player to score in a Championship match. His impact was not limited to scoring; by the 2017–18 campaign, he had helped secure Fulham's promotion to the Premier League, earning a staggering five individual honors, including Championship Player of the Season and Apprentice of the Year.
His talent was recognized globally. In 2017, prestigious outlets like Sports Illustrated and La Gazzetta dello Sport ranked him among the world's top under-20 prospects. This period also saw him achieve international success, helping England win the 2017 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, where he finished as the tournament's joint-top scorer. His technical precision even earned him a Guinness World Record in 2019 for the fastest time to hit both goal posts and the crossbar, completed in just 7.75 seconds.
After a high-profile £25 million move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2019, Sessegnon's career saw periods of both struggle and resurgence. Following a loan spell in the German Bundesliga with TSG Hoffenheim and a release from Spurs in 2024, he returned to Fulham on a free transfer. His second stint at the club has been marked by remarkable individual moments, such as scoring twice within 57 seconds of coming on as a substitute against Tottenham in March 2025.
