In short: Neeti Mohan’s path to Bollywood stardom wasn't just about talent; it was about a serendipitous meeting. After a missed opportunity to speak with A.R. Rahman, a random encounter with his manager changed everything, leading to a vocal audition that would define a generation of Indian film music.

Before becoming a household name in Hindi, Marathi, and Tamil cinema, Neeti Mohan’s musical journey began with formal training at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and the Bhatkhande Music Institute. Her early life in Delhi was marked by diverse pursuits, from participating in the Republic Day parade to serving as a top cadet in the National Cadet Corps. While she initially viewed singing as a "serious hobby" alongside dance and theatre, her trajectory shifted in 2003 when she won the Channel V reality show Popstars.

The pivotal moment in her career arrived in 2007. Having previously been part of the pop group Aasma, Mohan bumped into A.R. Rahman's manager outside a cinema. This chance meeting provided the intelligence she needed: Rahman’s team was auditioning for a US tour. She recorded a vocal audition featuring "Maya Maya" from the film Guru, and within three weeks, she was selected for the tour.

Her 2012 success in Student of the Year via "Ishq Wala Love" established this link, securing her a Filmfare R. D. Burman Prize for Emerging Musical Talent. Her versatility has since been her hallmark, ranging from the jazz-inspired tracks of Bombay Velvet—where she recorded while dressed as a jazz singer—to the baritone, sensuous tones requested by Amaal Mallik for Hate Story 3. Whether mastering Punjabi pronunciations or voicing animated characters like Rapunzel, Mohan continues to redefine the boundaries of the playback singer's craft.
