The architect of Bollywood comedy who stepped in to save a masterpiece
In short: Neeraj Vora was more than just a screenwriter; he was the creative glue for some of India's most enduring comedies. From writing iconic dialogues to stepping onto the screen when production stalled, his career illustrates how one individual's versatility can shape an entire cinematic genre.
Born in Bhuj, Gujarat, and raised in Mumbai, Neeraj Vora was shaped by a musical heritage. The Tar-Shehnai gained recognition as a standalone musical piece through his father, Pandit Vinayak Rai Nanalal Vora, an artist of classical music. This artistic lineage likely informed Vora's multi-faceted career, which spanned acting, directing, and composing music alongside his brother under the name Neeraj-Uttank.
Vora became a staple of Bollywood through his sharp wit in screenwriting. He penned dialogues for massive hits like Garam Masala (2005), Bhool Bhulaiya (2007), and the legendary Hera Pheri franchise. His ability to craft comedy was so respected that his 1992 Gujarati play, Aflatoon, served as the foundation for Rohit Shetty's Golmaal. Even when he stepped into the director's chair for Phir Hera Pheri in 2006, it was due to a logistical shift; he took over from Satish Kaushik because of scheduling conflicts.
One of Vora's most notable professional pivots occurred during the filming of Rangeela (1995). When the director needed to wrap up a scene and the intended actor was absent, Vora—who had written the script—stepped in to perform the role himself. This impromptu performance caught the attention of major stars like Anil Kapoor and Aamir Khan, launching his acting career in films such as Mann (1999) and Hello Brother (1999).
Tragically, Vora's life was cut short after a massive stroke in October 2016. He remained in a coma for 13 months at the home of producer Firoz Nadiadwala, where a room had been converted into a makeshift ICU. He passed away on December 14, 2017, at age 54. His final project, Hera Pheri 3, saw significant turmoil; he was eventually replaced as director following conflicts with lead actors before his passing.
