The billion-dollar battle for the out-of-market football fan
In short: For decades, watching your favorite team from afar required a massive satellite dish and a premium subscription. But a massive shift from satellite to streaming has recently upended the NFL's long-standing broadcasting empire, sparking legal wars and multibillion-dollar lawsuits.
Launched on September 4, 1994, NFL Sunday Ticket was designed to bridge the gap for fans living outside their team's local market. For nearly thirty years, the service was the exclusive domain of DirecTV in the United States. The arrangement was incredibly lucrative; by 2014, DirecTV had secured the rights by paying the league $1.5 billion annually for an eight-year term. This stability was even a factor in AT&T's 2015 acquisition of the satellite provider.
The landscape shifted dramatically for the 2023 season. The NFL moved residential rights exclusively to YouTube TV and YouTube's Primetime Channels. While the league sought the flexibility of streaming, the transition was not without friction. The move away from DirecTV followed period of uncertainty where the provider's owners questioned the package's value, noting that subscriber numbers were insufficient to reach a break-even point.
This era of broadcasting has also been defined by intense litigation. A class-action lawsuit involving millions of subscribers alleged that the NFL and DirecTV conspired to suppress competition and inflate prices. In June 2024, a Los Angeles jury initially found the NFL had violated antitrust laws, suggesting potential damages as high as $14.39 billion. However, this massive verdict was overturned in August 2024 by Judge Philip Gutierrez, who ruled that the jury's decision relied on flawed expert methodologies.
While residential fans moved to YouTube, the league created EverPass Media to handle commercial distribution for bars and restaurants. This new entity has already seen significant movement, including an investment from TKO Group Holdings in July 2024 and the announced acquisition of EverPass by DAZN in August 2026.
