How a torn hip labrum couldn't stop a record-breaking NFL career
In short: In 2009, Nick Folk’s career seemed over after a botched recovery from hip surgery left his performance erratic. Yet, the Dallas Cowboys kicker didn't fade away. Instead, he embarked on a decades-long journey of resilience, eventually becoming the most accurate active player in the league.
The trajectory of Nick Folk’s career is defined by a remarkable ability to overcome physical and professional setbacks. After being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft, Folk enjoyed a stellar rookie season, earning Pro Bowl honors and setting a franchise record with 131 points. However, the momentum stalled following a 2009 diagnosis of a torn labrum. An attempt to rush his rehabilitation led to improper healing, causing his field goal accuracy to plummet to 64.3% by late 2009, ultimately resulting in him being waived by the Cowboys.
Folk’s resurgence began with a stint with the New York Jets, where he refined his technique under special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff. During his tenure in New York, he became the franchise's second-leading all-time scorer and established a 23-game consecutive field goal streak. His career has been a series of high-stakes milestones, including a 57-consecutive field goal streak under 50 yards while with the New England Patriots and leading the league in scoring in 2021 with 150 points.
Even as he entered his 40s, Folk continued to rewrite the record books. In 2023, playing for the Tennessee Titans, he set a single-season franchise record for field goal percentage. By the 2025 season with the Jets, he achieved a 96.6% success rate, leading the NFL in percentage for the third consecutive year. Today, with 431 career field goals made, he sits 12th on the all-time NFL list, proving that precision can endure even when athleticism is tested.
