In short: In 2009, Nick Calathes made a decision that would redefine his legacy. Despite being a top-tier collegiate playmaker for the Florida Gators, he bypassed the NBA to join the Greek Basket League. This move paved the way for him to become one of the most decorated floor generals in European basketball history.

Calathes' journey began with elite pedigree; his father started the Orlando Raptors and Calathes was the leading high school scorer in Seminole County history. At the University of Florida (2007–2009), he became a standout playmaker, breaking school records for assists in both his freshman and sophomore years. Throughout his time there, he stood alone as the country's sole athlete maintaining a per-game mean of more than 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists.

The pivotal moment came on May 23, 2009. Calathes opted to sign with Panathinaikos Athens rather than pursue an NBA career. Although the Minnesota Timberwolves chose him during the 2009 NBA draft's second round (before a trade to the Dallas Mavericks), his move to Greece granted him a deal matching an early lottery pick. This decision allowed him to become a cornerstone of Greek basketball, eventually winning a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2009 and multiple domestic titles.

His career is defined by historic milestones in the EuroLeague. Calathes is currently the competition's all-time assists leader and all-time steals leader. In 2011, he claimed the EuroLeague trophy with Panathinaikos, and later competed in the 2021 final for FC Barcelona. Despite a 20-game NBA suspension in 2014 for a positive Tamoxifen test (linked to a supplement), he continued to dominate, later signing with Fenerbahçe and AS Monaco, consistently proving his status as one of the continent's premier floor generals.
