The youngest champion in history: Nick Wayne's rapid rise
In short: In the high-stakes world of professional wrestling, few athletes reach the summit as quickly as Nick Wayne. By the age of 19, he shattered records in two major promotions, becoming the youngest champion in history for both AEW and ROH through a trajectory defined by lineage and loyalty.
Nick Wayne is a third-generation wrestler, a lineage that traces back to his grandfather, Moondog Ed Moretti. He began his training as a child under his father, Buddy Wayne, who passed away in 2017. This heritage provided the foundation for Wayne's debut at just 12 years old in 2018. His career trajectory accelerated significantly in 2022 when he was offered a contract by AEW, a move that placed him on the path to major championship gold. Wayne's rise was marked by a dramatic shift in narrative on October 1, 2023. After turning on his long-time friend Darby Allin, he joined Christian Cage's stable, The Patriarchy. This transition saw him dubbed "The Prodigy" and eventually led to a historic milestone on July 21, 2024. By winning the AEW World Trios Championship at 19 years old, he became the youngest champion in the promotion's history. He mirrored this feat in Ring of Honor, capturing the World Television Championship on April 17, 2024, also at the age of 19. Despite his rapid success, Wayne's journey has been defined by physical and narrative shifts. He navigated a broken foot in 2025 and a transition from a family-centric stable—which included his mother, Shayna, as "The Matriarch"—to a solo singles career in 2026. His ability to maintain a high ranking, including a spot in the 2025 PWI 500, underscores his status as a legitimate prodigy in a sport often dominated by veterans.
