From Alabama high school standout to NFL's elite receiving force
In short: Dominique Stephon Collins has transformed from a promising recruit into a cornerstone of the Houston Texans. After navigating significant injuries and a breakout collegiate career at Michigan, he has established himself as a consistent 1,000-yard threat in the professional ranks.
Born in Pinson, Alabama, on March 19, 1999, Nico Collins first demonstrated his elite potential at Clay-Chalkville High School. During his junior year, he recorded 1,103 yards and 16 touchdowns, eventually helping his undefeated team secure the 2014 Class 6A state championship. In February 2017, he chose the University of Michigan over powerhouse programs like Alabama and Georgia.
Collins' collegiate journey at Michigan was marked by steady progression. After his first reception against Rutgers in October 2017, he earned Most Improved Offensive Player honors following a 2018 season featuring 632 receiving yards. By 2019, he was the team's second-leading receiver with 729 yards and was named the Michigan Offensive Player of the Year.
Selected 89th overall in the 2021 NFL draft, Collins faced the physical rigors of the NFL immediately. His early seasons were punctuated by stints on injured reserve due to shoulder and foot injuries. However, his 2023 campaign proved his resilience, as he recorded 80 receptions for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns, helping clinch a playoff spot for Houston.
The wide receiver has since entered the record books, becoming only the third player in Texans history to achieve three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons between 2023 and 2025. Despite facing setbacks like a hamstring injury in 2024, his ability to produce high-volume yardage—including a franchise-record 489 yards through the first four games of 2024—has earned him his first Pro Bowl honors and a significant three-year, $75 million contract extension.
