From a trash bin in Austin to an NFL legend's Hall of Fame legacy
In short: Abandoned in a trash can as an infant, Richard Lane overcame extreme poverty to become one of the most feared players in football history. Known as 'Night Train,' his ferocious tackling style was so intense it actually forced the NFL to change its rules forever.
Richard 'Night Train' Lane's journey began in Austin, Texas, in April 1928. Abandoned in a trash bin at three months old, he was raised by his adoptive mother, Ella Lane. His early life was defined by struggle; as a youth, he bused tables at hotels and shone shoes on Congress Avenue to help his family survive.
Lane's professional ascent was meteoric. After a stint in the Army and playing for the Omaha Rockets, he walked into the Los Angeles Rams offices in 1952 with a scrapbook of clippings to demand a tryout. He immediately dominated, setting an NFL rookie record with 14 interceptions—a mark that has stood for over 70 years. His career spanned 14 years across the Rams, the Chicago Cardinals, and the Detroit Lions, ultimately earning him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974.
Beyond his 68 career interceptions, Lane was defined by a physical intensity that altered the sport. He was famously known for 'necktie' tackles—grabbing opponents by the neck to stop their momentum instantly. This technique was so impactful that it contributed to the NFL's decision to prohibit face mask grasping in 1962 and eventually led to the ban on clothesline tackles. His legacy is cemented by his unanimous selection to the NFL's 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2019.
In 1999, The Sporting News placed him at number 20 among the 100 Greatest Football Players. He remains a singular figure in sports history, transitioning from a discarded infant to a man who was, according to the NFL, the second most feared tackler in the history of the league.
