The footballer who switched nations to reach the World Cup
In short: Nikola Katić has navigated a complex professional path across Europe. From the youth pitches of HNK Stolac to the intensity of the Bundesliga, his career is defined by significant transitions, including a high-stakes decision to change his international allegiance to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Born on 10 October 1996, Nikola Katić began his journey in the youth system of HNK Stolac in 2001. After making his professional debut at just 16 years old in 2013, he quickly moved through various clubs, including Neretvanac Opuzen and Slaven Belupo. His career took a significant turn in June 2018 when he joined the Scottish side Rangers, where he experienced both championship glory in March 2021 and a devastating anterior cruciate ligament tear in July 2020 that sidelined him for over a year.
A defining moment in Katić's career occurred in 2024 when he navigated the complex process of changing his sporting citizenship. Although he had previously represented Croatia at the under-21 level and made his senior debut against Mexico on 28 May 2017, he sought to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina instead. Following FIFA's approval in May 2024, he immediately earned call-ups for friendlies against England and Italy, making his debut against England on 3 June.
This decision paved the way for his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Katić was named in the Bosnia and Herzegovina squad for the tournament and made his debut in the opening group match against Canada on 12 June 2026. His recent career moves have seen him play for Zürich and Plymouth Argyle, eventually leading to his transfer to the German Bundesliga club Schalke 04 in July 2025, where he signed a contract through June 2028.
