In short: Nikola Mirotić’s career has been defined by elite scoring and high-stakes transfers, but his most intense battle occurred off the court. After a sudden contract termination, a web of alleged threats from politicians and the church threatened to derail his next move.

Nikola Mirotić, the Montenegrin-born power forward, has long been a titan of European basketball. From his early years in Podgorica, where he transitioned from football to basketball at age 13, to becoming the highest-paid player in Europe with a €26 million contract at FC Barcelona, his trajectory has been meteoric. A five-time All-EuroLeague Team member, he has achieved legendary status, including a 2020 league MVP and a place on the EuroLeague's all-time scoring list after surpassing 3,242 career points in October 2023.

However, his departure from Barcelona in July 2023 was marked by controversy. Following the club's unilateral termination of his contract, Mirotić was linked to several major clubs, including Panathinaikos and Partizan Belgrade. While Partizan's coach, Željko Obradović, suggested that Mirotić faced pressure from unnamed politicians and church members to avoid joining the Serbian powerhouse, Mirotić himself moved to deny these claims. He specifically used social media to debunk rumors that the Serbian Orthodox Church or Patriarch Porfirije had influenced his decision.

The tension surrounding his move to Partizan was further complicated by Mirotić's own claims of receiving insults and threats. While the club insisted these external pressures were not the cause of his decision, the saga highlighted the intense political and social pressures that can surround high-profile athletes in the region. Ultimately, Mirotić signed with Olimpia Milano in August 2023, continuing a career that has spanned the NBA, the Spanish Liga ACB, and the EuroLeague.
