From Bosnian youth leagues to the Premier League: the journey of Nikica Jelavić
In short: Before managing Lokomotiva, Nikica Jelavić was a prolific striker navigating the complexities of European football. From a disputed transfer from Rapid Wien to a historic Premier League Player of the Month award, his career spans multiple leagues and continents, marked by high-stakes goals and international duty.
Born in Čapljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jelavić's ascent began in the local Bosnian league system with GOŠK Gabela. His professional trajectory accelerated when he moved to the Croatian club NK Neretva before joining Hajduk Split's junior side at age 15. Despite early injuries that hindered his consistency at Hajduk, he eventually became a first-team regular during the 2006–07 season. He initially developed his skills at the nearby cross-border club NK Neretva. His move to the Hajduk Split academy was facilitated by several coaches, including Ivan Gudelj and Ante Prco.
Jelavić's career reached a significant peak during his tenure with Rangers in Scotland. Following a £4 million transfer during August 2010, he proved essential to their triumphs, securing both the Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Premier League during his debut campaign. His productivity stood out; he finished the 2010–11 season boasting Scotland's highest goals-per-game rate, netting 19 times in 27 starts. He notably scored a crucial winning goal in the 2011 Scottish League Cup Final against Celtic. His clinical finishing earned him the SFA goal of the season award for a strike against Aberdeen.
His impact continued in the English Premier League with Everton, where he arrived in January 2012 for a fee of £5 million. He achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Croatian player to be named Premier League Player of the Month in April 2012. After stints with Hull City, West Ham United, and clubs in China, Jelavić retired from professional play in 2021, eventually transitioning into management at Lokomotiva. During his time in England, he also represented Hull City and West Ham United. His final professional years included spells in China with Beijing Renhe and Guizhou Zhicheng.
