The defender who traded his jersey for a striker's role
In short: After winning every major trophy in German football and suffering repeated, career-threatening knee injuries, Niklas Süle did the unthinkable. He walked away from the elite professional stage to play as a forward in an amateur league, completing one final personal goal before hanging up his boots.
Niklas Süle's professional journey is defined by high-level success and physical resilience. Joining Bayern Munich in 2017 from TSG Hoffenheim, he quickly became a trophy winner, securing five Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokal trophies, and a UEFA Champions League title. His career was marked by significant physical setbacks; he suffered torn anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) during the 2014–15 season and again in the 2019–20 season. The latter injury sidelined him for nearly ten months, preventing his participation in the postponed UEFA Euro 2020.
Despite these hurdles, Süle remained a consistent presence on the pitch. He achieved a notable 95 percent pass completion rate during the 2018–19 Bundesliga season while ranking fourth in total touches among all players in the league. His international career saw him represent Germany in two FIFA World Cups (2018 and 2022) and earn 49 caps, including a final friendly match against Mexico in October 2023.
The most unique chapter of his story began in 2026. After announcing his retirement due to the risk of a third ACL injury, Süle fulfilled a personal wish to reach 300 Bundesliga matches by playing one final game for Eintracht Frankfurt. Shortly after, he partially emerged from retirement to join the amateur club Tiefenbach in the Kreisliga. In a striking departure from his career as a center-back, he made his debut for the amateur side as a striker, scoring a goal in a 7–2 loss.
