In short: In 1942, a massive upset on the football field sent ripples far beyond the scoreboard. When the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated Boston College, the Eagles' planned victory celebration was cancelled, inadvertently sparing the team from a devastating nightclub fire.

The rivalry between Holy Cross and Boston College, which began in 1896, has historically drawn some of New England's largest sporting crowds. To accommodate these massive audiences, games were often moved from the Worcester campus to major Boston venues like Fenway Park in 1916 and Braves Field in 1922, where a record 54,000 spectators attended.

The most infamous chapter of this rivalry occurred on November 28, 1942. Holy Cross secured a stunning 55–12 victory, spoiling Boston College's undefeated season. The loss prompted the Eagles to cancel their scheduled victory party at the popular Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston. Because the team was absent, they escaped the club's subsequent fire, which claimed nearly 500 lives.

Beyond this tragedy, the program has experienced significant shifts in both fortune and structure. The team reached its bowl game peak on January 1, 1946, at the Orange Bowl, though they lost to the University of Miami 13–6 following an 89-yard interception return. In the 1980s, the program transitioned into the Colonial League, adopting a model of need-based financial aid rather than athletic scholarships.

While the program faced challenges, including a 1969 season cancellation due to a hepatitis outbreak from a contaminated practice field faucet, it also saw a renaissance under coach Mark Duffner. During this era, the Crusaders achieved undefeated seasons in 1987 and 1991, even reaching the No. 1 ranking in the 1987 NCAA Division I-AA poll.
