The first wrestling event held without McMahon family control
In short: In September 2023, WWE launched NXT No Mercy, a milestone that signaled more than just a new show. It marked the end of an era: the first time the company operated without the ownership of the McMahon family, debuting under a massive corporate merger with TKO Group Holdings.
NXT No Mercy (2023) served as a structural pivot point for WWE. While it was the brand's first annual 'No Mercy,' it also represented the company's first 'premium live event' (PLE)—a designation introduced in early 2022 to describe content available on both traditional pay-per-view and livestreaming platforms. This shift coincided with a major transition in ownership; following the sale to Endeavor, WWE merged with the UFC to form TKO Group Holdings. The September 30 event was the first PLE under this new corporate entity.
The event also marked a significant departure from traditional broadcasting models. Because WWE ceased broadcasting NXT events on PPV in 2022, No Mercy became the first of its kind to bypass that format entirely. Instead, it debuted on various international streaming services including Peacock (USA), SonyLIV (India), and Disney+ Hotstar (Indonesia), reflecting a move toward global digital accessibility rather than regional cable distribution.
On the ring, the event featured high-stakes crossovers between developmental talent and established stars. Becky Lynch from Raw kept her NXT Women's Championship by beating Tiffany Stratton during an Extreme Rules bout, as Ilja Dragunov also won the NXT Championship over Carmelo Hayes. These matches were the culmination of months of scripted narratives, including a complex 'NXT Global Heritage Invitational' tournament that determined various contenders across different brand rosters.
Historically, No Mercy has been an inconsistent fixture. Originally launched in 1999 as a UK-exclusive PPV before moving to the US, it was discontinued in 2009 and briefly revived in 2016. It remained on the main roster schedule until 2017, when WWE ended production of brand-exclusive livestreaming events for the main roster following WrestleMania 34.
