In short: In September 2014, WWE launched an event that did more than just crown a champion. By reviving the 'Fatal 4-Way' name for its developmental brand, NXT, the promotion established a permanent naming convention that would define how major wrestling events are branded to this day.

NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way took place on September 11, 2014, at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. While it was the second event under the 'TakeOver' banner, it served a critical structural purpose for WWE. It solidified 'TakeOver' as the official branding for all of NXT’s major periodic events throughout the year. The show aired exclusively on the WWE Network. It was held at the promotion's home venue during that period.

The naming of the show was also a nod to history. The promotion had previously held its own eponymous Fatal 4-Way pay-per-view in June 2010 for its main roster brands, Raw and SmackDown. By bringing that specific match type—a four-person free-for-all where the first pinfall or submission wins—to the forefront of the second TakeOver, WWE bridged the gap between its established history and its new digital livestreaming era. This specific match type involves a four-person free-for-all format. A victory is achieved by whichever competitor secures a submission or pinfall initially.

The event featured a card of six matches built on scripted storylines produced for the NXT television program. Adrian Neville kept his title by overcoming Sami Zayn, Tyler Breeze, and Tyson Kidd during a contest featuring daring moves including 'Helluva Kicks' plus 'Red Arrows'. Aside from this primary bout, the programme featured notable first appearances like Hideo Itami's while also initiating enduring feuds for Bayley and Charlotte. The Lucha Dragons won the tag team titles from The Ascension. Baron Corbin defeated CJ Parker in just 29 seconds.
