In short: In 1995, WWE launched 'In Your House' as a low-cost monthly series. It vanished in 1999, only to be resurrected in 2020 during a global pandemic. This revival wasn't just a nostalgia trip; it was a strategic pivot that redefined how the promotion delivered its content.

The 'In Your House' branding originally served as a home for monthly pay-per-view (PPV) events between 1995 and 1999. These shows were strategically scheduled during gaps in WWE’s primary schedule—which included major pillars like WrestleMania and SummerSlam—and were sold at lower price points to reach a broader audience. The brand was retired in February 1999, just as the company began moving toward permanent names for its monthly fixtures.

Fast forward to June 7, 2020, and WWE revived the name for NXT's 29th TakeOver event. This marked a significant shift in distribution: it was the first 'In Your House' to air exclusively on the WWE Network rather than traditional PPV. It also represented the first time the brand appeared in over 21 years. The revival was born of necessity; the COVID-19 pandemic had forced NXT to move its programming behind closed doors at Full Sail University, leading to the cancellation of other scheduled events.

The event served as a bridge between eras. While it honored the 25th anniversary of the original 1995 launch, it also established an annual subseries for NXT. The production featured high-concept 'cinematic' elements, such as the Backlot Brawl—a pre-recorded match featuring Adam Cole and Velveteen Dream set in a parking lot with cars and ladders. This blend of traditional wrestling and cinematic storytelling helped define the brand's identity before the TakeOver series was eventually discontinued in late 2021.

The main event saw Io Shirai capture the NXT Women's Championship by pinning Rhea Ripley while Charlotte Flair was trapped in a submission hold. The night also featured Karrion Kross securing a technical submission over Tommaso Ciampa and Keith Lee retaining his North American title against Johnny Gargano.
