The rise and restructuring of a wrestling era's premier live events
In short: For seven years, the TakeOver brand defined professional wrestling as an exclusive, high-production spectacle. It transformed from a niche livestream into a global phenomenon before being dismantled during a major corporate restructure that changed how the sport is presented to fans.
The NXT TakeOver series began in May 2014, following WWE's 2012 shift of the NXT brand from a reality competition show to a developmental territory. While 'Arrival' was the first live special on the WWE Network in February 2014, it was the subsequent May event that established 'TakeOver' as the primary branding for all major live specials. Full Sail University, situated within Winter Park, Florida, served as the primary venue for these gatherings until they grew into global affairs, beginning with TakeOver: Brooklyn during 2015.
The series functioned as a prestige sub-brand, often serving as support events for WWE's 'Big Four' pay-per-views. It introduced recurring subseries like Toronto and Chicago, and most notably WarGames, which featured the namesake match. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the brand faced significant shifts: TakeOver: Tampa Bay was canceled in April 2020, and subsequent events moved to the 'Capitol Wrestling Center'—a bio-secure bubble featuring a virtual fan experience similar to the WWE ThunderDome.
The era officially concluded in August 2021 with TakeOver 36. In September 2021, NXT underwent a restructuring into 'NXT 2.0,' reverting to its developmental roots. While specific sub-brands like Stand & Deliver and In Your House continued as independent events, the overarching TakeOver name was retired. This transition marked a move away from the brand's identity as a standalone premium series toward a restructured programming model for the promotion.
The distribution of these events also evolved significantly during this period. Originally exclusive to the WWE Network, they moved to traditional pay-per-view in October 2020 and were added to Peacock in April 2021. This expansion reflected the brand's growth from a streaming-only niche to a mainstream commercial product before its eventual rebranding.
