From Chelsea's youth academy to Nigerian international stardom
In short: Born in England but representing Nigeria, Ola Aina's career has spanned the Premier League, the Championship, and Italy's Serie A. Discover how a former Chelsea prospect navigated loans and transfers to become a key figure for Nottingham Forest and a mainstay for the Super Eagles.
Temitayo Olufisode Olaoluwa 'Ola' Aina's professional journey began in the Chelsea academy, where he joined as an under-11 player. By the 2012–13 season, he had made his youth team debut, eventually starring in the FA Youth Cup finals. His senior career at Chelsea saw him feature in pre-season friendlies under José Mourinho and earn his professional debut under Antonio Conte in August 2016, notably replacing legendary defender John Terry during an EFL Cup match.
Seeking consistent playing time, Aina embarked on several pivotal loan spells. In 2017, he moved to Championship side Hull City, followed by a highly successful stint in Italy with Torino. During his time in Serie A, he helped Torino secure a seventh-place finish and a Europa League qualifying spot. In 2019, Torino exercised an option to make his transfer permanent for a reported £9 million fee.
Aina's career has been defined by his versatility and international commitment. While he represented England at various youth levels up to under-20, he pledged his international future to Nigeria in May 2017. Since then, he has played a significant role in Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, including being named in the 2023 Team of the Tournament.
Currently playing as a full-back or wing-back for Nottingham Forest, Aina has continued to find success in the Premier League. After joining the club in July 2023, he has secured contract extensions, most recently extending his stay at the City Ground until the summer of 2028.
