Okan Buruk holds the record for the most Turkish league titles in history
In short: As a player and manager, Okan Buruk has redefined success in Turkish football. From his early days as a relentless midfielder at Galatasaray to his tactical evolution as a head coach, he has secured more league championships than any other individual in the history of the country's top division.
Born on 19 October 1973, Buruk began his professional journey at Galatasaray in 1992. During a nine-year tenure, he became a central figure in the club's rise, winning six league titles and playing a vital role in the 1999–2000 UEFA Cup victory, the first time a Turkish team claimed that trophy. His playing career also included stints at Inter Milan, Beşiktaş, and İstanbul Başakşehir, alongside 56 appearances for the national team, including the historic bronze-medal run at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Transitioning to management, Buruk quickly established a reputation for high-tempo pressing and effective player development. He made history in the 2019–20 season by guiding İstanbul Başakşehir to their maiden league championship, becoming only the second manager to win the title without leading one of the traditional Big Four clubs. His return to Galatasaray as head coach in 2022 marked a period of unprecedented domestic dominance, where he secured four consecutive league titles between 2023 and 2026.
Buruk's tenure at Galatasaray has been defined by record-breaking performances, including a 102-point season and a 17-game winning streak. His tactical influence extends to European competition, where he led the club to the Champions League Round of 16 in 2026 after notable victories against Liverpool and Ajax. Despite his success, his future remains a subject of club evaluation as his contract approaches its expiration in June 2026, highlighting the high-pressure environment of top-tier football management.
