How a record-breaking first catch launched an NFL career
In short: In late 2019, Olamide Zaccheaus did something no other player in NFL history has achieved. After making his professional debut, his very first reception resulted in a massive touchdown, setting a league record that remains a remarkable statistical anomaly in the modern era of football.
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, on July 23, 1997, Olamide Zaccheaus emerged from a standout collegiate career at the University of Virginia. While playing for the Cavaliers, he demonstrated exceptional talent, especially in his final year when he topped the ACC with 93 catches, 1,058 yards, and nine scores. This performance earned him a first-team All-ACC selection and culminated in a Most Valuable Player award at the 2018 Belk Bowl. During his time in college, he also contributed as a runner. He finished his university career with 551 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Zaccheaus entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Atlanta Falcons on April 27, 2019. His professional journey took an immediate, historic turn on December 8, 2019. In a victory against the Carolina Panthers, he caught a 93-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan. This play was not only the third-longest reception in Falcons franchise history, but it also established an NFL record for the longest reception on a player's first career catch.
Since that breakout rookie season, Zaccheaus has become a versatile journeyman across the league. He has spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, and Chicago Bears, before eventually returning to the Atlanta Falcons on a two-year, $4.5 million contract in March 2026. His career is defined by this ability to contribute across different rosters, moving from an undrafted prospect to a seasoned veteran in the National Football League. His professional path has seen him represent several different franchises.
