In short: In 2016, one wide receiver rewrote the NCAA record books. Isaiah Avery 'Zay' Jones didn't just break records; he shattered them, setting new benchmarks for single-season and career receptions that stood as the gold standard for Division I football.

Isaiah Avery 'Zay' Jones arrived at East Carolina University as a standout from Austin, Texas, and quickly ascended to legendary status. During his 2016 senior season, Jones achieved a feat of incredible volume, recording 158 receptions. This performance broke the previous single-season NCAA Division I record of 155, which had been held by Freddie Barnes of Bowling Green since 2009. He also surpassed the career receptions record of 387, previously held by his former teammate Justin Hardy, finishing his collegiate career with 399 total catches.

His dominance was characterized by explosive, high-frequency production. In a single game during that record-breaking 2016 campaign, Jones hauled in 22 receptions, eclipsing the previous school record of 17. His progression through the college ranks was steady and impactful: from 62 receptions as a true freshman in 2013 to 81 as a sophomore, and 98 as a junior, before his historic senior year. His talent for creating space and controlling the football led to his selection as a 2016 Biletnikoff Award finalist, alongside two others.

Transitioning to the professional stage, Jones was selected 37th overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2017 NFL draft. While his professional career has seen him move through various franchises—including the Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans—his impact remains defined by his ability to serve as a primary target. Despite facing significant physical hurdles, such as a torn labrum during his rookie season and a devastating torn Achilles in late 2024, his legacy remains anchored in those unprecedented collegiate numbers.
