The rare specialist who achieved three consecutive Premier League promotions
In short: Most footballers dream of a single promotion. Oliver Norwood turned it into a repeatable feat. Between 2017 and 2019, the midfielder mastered the art of the ascent, climbing into the top flight with three different clubs in three years.
Oliver Norwood’s career is defined by a remarkable period of sustained success in the English Championship. While many players struggle to reach the Premier League, Norwood achieved three consecutive promotions with three separate clubs: Brighton & Hove Albion in the 2016–17 season, Fulham in 2018, and Sheffield United in 2019. His ability to dictate tempo and his prowess as a set-piece specialist made him a vital component of these ascending squads.
His journey began in the Manchester United academy, where he joined as a seven-year-old after being spotted by scouts in his hometown of Burnley. Although he progressed through the ranks to earn a professional contract in 2009 and even received a Champions League call-up, he eventually rejected a contract extension from United in 2012 to pursue regular first-team football. This decision led to a nomadic but highly decorated career across clubs like Huddersfield Town, Reading, and eventually Stockport County, where he currently serves as captain.
Beyond his club exploits, Norwood’s international career followed a unique trajectory. Despite playing for England's under-17 side, his Northern Irish roots meant he featured for Northern Ireland across all tiers, from under-19s up to the senior side. He famously scored free-kicks against Germany and the Czech Republic at the under-21 level before retiring from international football in August 2019. Today, he continues his career in League One, maintaining his reputation as a decorated midfielder with multiple Team of the Year honors to his name.
