The teenage prodigy who nearly broke the Premier League record
In short: In 2010, a 16-year-old winger from Birmingham made his professional debut, standing on the precipice of history. He was just nine days away from becoming the youngest player in Premier League history, a feat that would have eclipsed the record set by Fulham's Matthew Briggs.
Nathan Redmond's ascent began in the Birmingham City academy, where he was spotted by scouts at just eight years old. By the 2009–10 season, he was already competing in the academy's under-18 side as a schoolboy. His talent was quickly recognized by manager Alex McLeish, who described his debut performance against Rochdale in August 2010 as 'electric,' noting his ability to use pace to trouble defenders.
Redmond's early career was marked by rapid progression through the international ranks. He represented England from the under-16 level through to the under-21s, even earning a senior debut against Germany in March 2017. His versatility was a hallmark of his play; while naturally a winger, coaches like Peter Taylor noted his ability to operate as a 'number 10,' and he frequently transitioned between the left and right flanks.
His club journey saw him move from Birmingham to Norwich City in 2013, followed by a significant £10 million move to Southampton in 2016. At Southampton, he became a key figure in their Premier League survival and earned both Fans' and Players' Player of the Year awards. After spells with Beşiktaş, Burnley, and Sheffield Wednesday, Redmond continued his career through the mid-2020s, including a stint with Blackburn Rovers in 2026.
Despite the highs of international recognition and Premier League success, his path was not without obstacles. He faced regulatory hurdles, such as a cancelled loan to Burton Albion in 2011 due to rules forbidding first-year scholars from signing with League clubs. He also had to navigate the physical demands of the professional game, dealing with injuries like a groin strain during his time at Sheffield Wednesday.
