In short: In 1990, U2 arrived in Berlin expecting inspiration from a reuniting Europe, but found only tension and creative deadlock. The band was on the verge of a breakup until a 15-minute improvisation changed everything, resulting in a masterpiece that explores the difficult necessity of togetherness.

During the recording sessions for their 1991 album Achtung Baby at Hansa Studios in Berlin, U2 faced a profound identity crisis. While bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. wanted to maintain the band's established sound, Bono and the Edge were drawn to European industrial and electronic dance music. This friction, combined with a struggle to develop demos into finished songs, led Mullen to fear the band might be finished.

The breakthrough arrived during a jam session for a song called "Sick Puppy." Following a suggestion from producer Daniel Lanois, guitarist the Edge played two separate sections sequentially on an acoustic guitar. The band immediately recognized the power of the improvisation. Bono later noted that the melody and structure of "One" were completed in just 15 minutes, describing the lyrics as a gift that "just fell out of the sky."

The song's meaning is layered and often misunderstood. While some saw it as a wedding anthem, Bono has clarified that it is actually about the difficulty of coexistence. Inspired by the German reunification and the band's own fractured relationships, the song rejects the "hippie" notion of effortless oneness. Instead, it suggests that while we are not the same, we have no choice but to carry each other to survive. This complexity is mirrored in the production, where Brian Eno insisted on deconstructing the track, even initially despising it, to strip away excessive overdubs and add an aggressive, "crying" guitar element.
